Lauren Wu, MHS: The ONC Health IT Certification Program – supporting widespread health information exchange and interoperability

Abstract

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) Health IT Certification Program is a voluntary certification program established by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT to provide for the certification of health IT standards, implementation specifications and certification criteria adopted by the Secretary.  The ONC Health IT Certification Program supports the availability of certified health IT for its encouraged and required use under federal, state and private programs. Lauren Wu will present a brief history of the establishment and structure of the ONC Health IT Certification Program. She will also present how the Program is supporting widespread health information exchange and promoting interoperability.

About Lauren Wu

Lauren Wu is the Deputy Director of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) Health IT Certification Program at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She is passionate about improving the U.S. health care system through the use of health information technology.

As a public health professional, Lauren has specialty training and experience in epidemiology and infectious diseases. She has worked on a number of program implementation and policy projects. Lauren led the development of the 2010-2020 National Vaccine Plan and National Vaccine Implementation Plan for the National Vaccine Program Office. She also staffed a federal advisory committee in the development of recommendations for improving adult immunization the U.S.

Lauren works with the Director of the ONC Health IT Certification Program to implement federal regulations and provide implementation guidance to help improve the interoperability of electronic health data across health care settings through the use of standards. She is at the cross-section of health IT policy, standards, and implementation work with an eye toward health care delivery system reform.
