Simon Lin, M.D.: Capitalizing on the Promise of Big Data: Toward a Learning Healthcare System
There is an urgent need to transform our health care into a system that rapidly learns from everyone being cared. In a 2007 JAMA commentary, Westfall asserted that “It takes an estimated average of 17 years for only 14% of new scientific discoveries to enter day-to-day clinical practice”. The era of big data promises to generate significant new insights from integrated access to biobanks, genome sequencing, patent-reported outcomes, and electronic medical records. In this talk, I will overview a number of systems that we developed to enable phenome-wide association study and an ongoing effort to develop a learning pediatric healthcare system by eight of the nation’s largest children’s hospital systems.
