Senior Bianca Garfias recognized for academic excellence at IUPUI Cesar Chavez Celebration Dinner
March 28, 2011
Bianca Garfias, a senior in the Media Arts and Science program at the IU School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI, was recognized for academic distinction yesterday at IUPUI’s annual César Chávez Celebration Dinner. She received the Academic Excellence Award, given each year to the graduating Latino student with the highest grade point average.
Garfias is originally from Indianapolis, but spent many of her formative years in Mexico before returning to Indianapolis to attend Ben Davis High School. She has been routinely honored for academic achievement, including receiving the ThemeVision scholarship during her junior year. She has also served as a mentor to college-bound high school students. Upon graduation, Garfias plans to become a professional web designer and illustrator.
The César Chávez Celebration Dinner follows the César Chávez Day of Service each year, which brings together IUPUI students and members of the Indianapolis community to recognize Chávez, a Mexican American farm worker, labor leader and civil rights activist through volunteerism. The day of service is organized by the Community Service Scholars of the Sam H. Jones Community Service Scholarship Program.
