School of Informatics and Computing sponsors bioinformatics workshop in India to increase international research collaborations

August 24, 2011

The School of Informatics and Computing and IUPUI are building upon a relationship formed last year with the National Institute of Technology Calicut (NITC) to offer their second annual International Symposium on Biocomputing (ISB) on September 12 in Calicut, India. This two-day workshop hopes to further increase international research collaborations among biotechnology and bioinformatics scholars, engineers and scientists.

This event is sponsored by Indo-US Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF) and the Indian government’s Department of Biology (DBT), as well as a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant awarded to the School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI and its Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, Mathew Palakal, Ph.D. Palakal is also an ISB co-chair and a featured speaker at the 2011 event.

In addition to Palakal, IU School of Medicine’s Keith Dunker, Ph.D., and Lang Li, Ph.D., will present. Other speakers include Thomas E. Ferrin of the University of California – San Francisco, Mona Singh from Princeton University, Teresa M. Przytycka from the National Center for Biotechnology Information Advances Science and Health, Tarynn M. Witten of Virginia Commonwealth University, G.P.S Raghava of the Institute of Microbial Technology, Pramod Wangikar of IIT Bombay, Ramesh Hariharan from Strand Life Sciences – Bangalore, Ashish Tendulkar of IIT Madras and Pawan K. Dhar from Symbiosis International University – Pune.

Both the 2011 ISB workshop and its predecessor emerged from a recognition that international divides often present barriers to effective research and discovery. Palakal and his NITC colleagues envision the ISB as a way to integrate international research that may improve the scientific community’s understanding of biological systems and enhance quality of human life.
