Josette Jones named to national informatics forum

Josette JonesJosette Jones, Ph.D., has been named acting chair of the American Medical Informatics Association’s Academic Forum. She also has served as secretary of the forum the last two years. This membership unit within AMIA is dedicated to serving the needs of biomedical and health informatics training programs.

Jones serves as director of Health Informatics in the School of Informatics and Computing’s BioHealth Informatics Department.

AMIA, a national organization that connects professionals and students interested in informatics, is dedicated to leading the way in transforming health care through trusted science, education, and the practice of informatics.

Jones also has been appointed to:

  • AMIA Accreditation Committee
  • Health Informatics Accreditation Council of CAHIIM (Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education)

In 2020 she was named a Fellow of AMIA. Fellows are recognized, AMIA notes, for applying informatics skills and knowledge within their professional setting, demonstrating professional achievement and leadership, and sustaining commitment to the betterment of AMIA.

Placing curriculum at the cutting edge

“Professor Josette Jones has been a tireless advocate for promoting and advancing the Health Informatics program, not only in at SoIC but also across the country, by actively engaging and working with professional organizations such as CAHIIM,” says Mathew Palakal, Ph.D., Senior Executive Associate Dean of the IU School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI.

“Her leadership placed our Health Informatics curriculum at the cutting edge, resulting in receiving national accreditation. Her active role in this received national recognition and invitations to serve on professional committees at the national levels.”

Jones also is an author of a paper chosen as a Best Paper selection in the Consumer Health Informatics and Education section of the 2019 Yearbook of Medical Informatics.

The paper, published by JMIR Medical Informatics, is “Novel Approach to Cluster Patient-Generated Data Into Actionable Topics: Case Study of a Web-Based Breast Cancer Forum.” Co-authors of the paper are Meeta Pradhan, Masoud Hosseini, Anand Kulanthaivel, and Mahmood Hosseini.

Shaping the field of health informatics

A key member of an international community of health informatics professionals, Jones has shaped SoIC’s health informatics curriculum, serving as a mentor to students in this evolving field. In 2015, she helped to set the standards for health informatics education as a member of an AMIA-CAHIIM committee.

An affiliate scientist with the Regenstrief Institute, Jones is an associate professor of Health Informatics and Nursing. She is active in the Midwest Nursing Research Society (MNRS) Nursing Informatics section; Nursing Informatics Taskforce of the Health Information Systems Society (HIMSS); Alliance for Nursing Informatics; and the Alpha Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Nursing Honor Society.
