Alumna Jennifer Johnson is a 2017 Mover and Shaker

April 24, 2017

IU School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI alumna Jennifer Johnson is a 2017 Mover and Shaker, an honor bestowed by the Library Journal to librarians who transform their communities through innovative programs and services.

Johnson received her master’s degree in Library Science in 2011 and has been the digital scholarship outreach librarian at the University Library at IUPUI for the past 4 years. She served in prior roles at the University Library as a GIS applications analyst and as a digital initiatives project coordinator.

Among her many accomplishments is playing a pivotal role in the University Library becoming one of 21 service hubs of the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA), serving as chair of the organization’s outreach committee.

“Jennifer has developed an expert-level reputation in academic library community engagement,” said Kristi Palmer, associate dean for digital scholarship at the University Library.

Currently, Johnson is leading a 3-D digitization effort for libraries and other cultural institutions—researching and refining standards for 3-D scanning. With an eye toward what’s next, Johnson continues to set new benchmarks in her field of expertise and teach others how to meet them.

Johnson has received nearly $500,000 in grants to fund special projects. Among Johnson’s favorite projects is the library’s collaboration with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a preservation effort involving more than 21,000 images and 100 audio clips of Speedway historian Donald Davidson recounting the Speedway’s long history.

Andrea Copeland, interim chair of the Department of Library and Information Science at the IU School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI said, “I’m thrilled that Jenny’s work is being recognized by this award. She has made significant contributions to the library trifecta—community, content, and connections. Her accomplishments in digital scholarship are remarkable and serve as an inspiration to our current students.”
