In memoriam: Timothy Altom

Tim AltomIt is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Timothy Altom, adjunct lecturer at the Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI. Altom passed away on April 17, 2017. We extend our condolences to his family and friends, which includes his colleagues at IUPUI, students, and alumni.

A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, April 20, at the Downey Avenue Christian Church in Irvington, 111 S. Downey Avenue, Indianapolis. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. A service will follow at 5:30 p.m.

“Tim made enormous and lasting contributions to our programs, to our lives, and to the lives of our students. Our thoughts and deepest sympathy are with his family,” said Executive Associate Dean Mathew J. Palakal.

One of the first graduates of the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) program, Altom received his B.A. and M.S. degrees from IUPUI. As an adjunct lecturer in informatics and HCI at the School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI for the past 12 years, he influenced the minds and futures of hundreds of current students and alumni.

While teaching at IUPUI, Altom was a senior business consultant and data analyst at Perficient, an IBM marketing area that promotes cloud solutions. An expert technology manager with years of corporate experience, Altom authored several publications on user experience and was widely consulted on his knowledge of the industry. He was co-founder and leader of the Indiana Chapter of the User Experience Professionals’ Association, which engaged many in World Usability Days and other events.

“Tim will be very much missed by our students and faculty,” said Davide Bolchini, chair of the Department of Human-Centered Computing (HCC). “He served as a relentless advocate for them, our programs, and the user experience community in Indianapolis. He will be remembered as a knowledgeable, passionate, and enthusiastic instructor and friend.”
