September 13, 2013
Crystal Boston-Clay, doctoral student in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) program at the IU School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI, was recently accepted to the prestigious Informatics Graduate Fellowship program.
The program sponsored by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE), and the Public Health Informatics Institute, focuses primarily on public health informatics and other public health related fields. The Informatics Fellowship program is one-year in length and provides recent masters and pre-doctoral fellows with the opportunity to gain real world, hands-on experience at the local, state, and federal level. To gain admittance into the program, candidates must first undergo a series of interviews.
Crystal’s time in the Informatics Fellowship program will be spent working at the Marion County Public Health Department. While at the Marion County Public Health Department, Crystal will work on updating their master patient index, the design and evaluation of their electronic medical records as well as training staff on how to properly use these new systems.
Crystal credits the School of Informatics and Computing with peaking her interest in a career in the Public Health Informatics field. She also believes the research being conducted by the HCI faculty opened her eyes to just how relevant and applicable their work is to the real world.
Crystal, originally from Atlanta, Georgia, first heard of the IUPUI School of Informatics and Computing through the Summer Scholar Institute- STEMS Initiative. Ultimately, Crystal says the decision to choose the School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI was an easy one. She acknowledges the research being performed by the faculty, and its convenient location to many outstanding hospitals as of paramount importance in her decision making process.
