Finnell quoted in March 26 issue of USA Today

April 5, 2012

Dr. J.T. Finnell, director and associate professor of health informatics, was quoted in the March 26 issue of USA Today for an article entitled, “Obama’s health law has accelerated marketplace change.”

Finnell was interviewed about local- and state-run health information exchanges to share patients’ medical information among different systems. Several hospitals in Indianapolis started their own exchange a decade ago, the article states. It continues, “…Today, the exchange has expanded well beyond that goal and the city’s limits to include data on 10 million patients shared with 80 hospitals and 19,000 doctors. The exchange enables health care providers to instantly access a patient’s medical history whether they are in emergency rooms or at their family doctor.

‘It helps speed the care, and we can provide better care,’ said J.T. Finnell, an emergency room physician at Wishard Health Services, the public health system in Indianapolis. He said the information also reduces unnecessary tests and makes sure patients get the right medications.”

Finnell is also associate professor of emergency medicine for the IU School of Medicine and research scientist for Regenstrief Institute.
