Finnell named director of health informatics program

IU School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI has named John. T. Finnell, M.D., M.S., as director and associate professor of its health informatics program.
Finnell will play an integral role in shaping the future of the graduate and doctoral program. He is principal investigator on a recent $1.4 million grant funded by the Office of the National Coordinator to offer workforce development programs training individuals for important new careers in health information technology. These graduate-level programs are available as part of the School of Informatics and Computing’ health informatics program, in collaboration with the Regenstrief Institute and the IU schools of Medicine and Nursing.
In addition to his role with the School of Informatics and Computing, Finnell is associate professor of emergency medicine at the IU School of Medicine and a research scientist at the Regenstrief Institute. His past research endeavors have focused on emergency department infrastructure and data capture for improved delivery.
Dedicated to the acquisition, analysis and meaningful use of patient data, health informatics is gaining increased importance for its ability to deliver new information systems and technologies that achieve higher quality healthcare at lower cost.
