Fall 2021 Capstone adds new dimension to Senior Showcase

January 20, 2022

The School of Informatics and Computing’s Capstone Senior Showcase on December 10, 2021 felt and looked a little different than in years past but 57 students were on hand for this unique bi-annual event celebrating the culmination of hard work, perseverance, innovation, and creativity.

Undergraduate and graduate students from nearly every major presented throughout the evening in-person and on Zoom their research posters, original videos, digital games, 3D animations, VR projects, and internships that highlighted their acquired skills and developed talents.

New this fall—live stream of student interviews and the award ceremony on YouTube and employer voting via the school’s proprietary DCeXa system.

Employer’s Choice awards for $500 each were garnered by Media Arts and Science (MAS) students Emma Overmyer and Yasmine Mestaghanmi who tied, and Informatics student Timothy Ware, Jr.

Best of Show awards went to MAS students (in a six way tie): Jess Hayes, Emma Overmyer, Jesus Garza, Kayleigh Jones, Aaron Keilman, Joel Holland, Isaac Johnston, and Georgie Elaine; Biomedical Informatics student Anna Zetzl, and Informatics student Timothy Ware, Jr.

Award ceremony emcee, MAS professor Mathew Powers, had this to say to the participating students, “To all of you that presented tonight, you guys have added something to this world…this world has been taking a lot from us and you guys have been helping to fight that by adding to it. Creation helps, whether it’s a cartoon animation or character or it’s a research project—finding new ways of doing things—or it’s an internship. You leave here with something out there for people to live with, to enjoy, to experience, to take on.

“You guys have added something that will echo through time.”
