HIM-M 355 ICD-10-CM/PCS Coding

3 credits

Prerequisites: HIM M330 and BIOL N211

This course covers both diagnosis and procedure classification systems, namely the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification and Procedure Coding System (ICD-10-CM/PCS). Students learn accurate coding guidelines to code, index, and sequence diagnoses and procedures for medical documentation. Ethical coding guidelines are examined.

Learning Outcomes

  • Assign diagnosis and procedure codes.
  • Monitor, verify, and interpret the use of ICD-10-CM/PCS and ICD-9-CM/PCS diagnoses and procedure codes in the organization’s health information systems.
  • Assure that documentation in the health record supports the diagnosis and reflects the progress, clinical findings, and discharge status.
  • Validate coding accuracy using clinical information found in the health record.
