Job Search Checklist

The job search can feel overwhelming, so it’s helpful to break it into manageable steps.  You don’t have to do every step in order.  Start checking off as many of these activities as you can, and you’ll find yourself on the way to a great opportunity.  If you are not sure how to do these steps then visit the Career Services Office to get started.

Step 1:  Get to know yourself

  • ____ I have identified my personal strengths, skills, interests and values.
  • ____ I have researched some possible job titles/fields of interest for my major.

  • ____ Through my research, I can name two or three jobs I plan to pursue.

Step 2:  Know where you want to work

  • ____ I have researched organizations or companies that might hire someone with my skills,
  • interests and background.
  • ____ I have identified the top three geographic areas where I’d like to live and work.
  • ____ I have identified 10 potential employers for the type of work I’m seeking.
  • ____ I have job shadowed in my area/s of interest.

Step 3:  Get ready for the search

  • ____ I have had my resume and cover letter reviewed by a staff member in the Career Services Office.
  • ____ I have identified three individuals who will serve as references.
  • ____ I have interview apparel that is appropriate for the field in which I plan to work.
  • ____ I have participated in a mock interview session to practice my responses to typical interviewing questions to further develop my interviewing skills.
  • ____ I have a professional-sounding answering machine/voice mail message in case an employer calls.
  • ____ I have a professional email address to give to employers.
  • ____ I have researched and joined student or professional organizations in my field of interest.
  • ____ I have participated in the school Internship Program to get experience in areas of my major.

Step 4:  Start searching

  • ____ I regularly check the recruiting site or talk with faculty for learn about new opportunities.
  • ____ I have a system for keeping track of my contacts, interviews and other job-search activities.
  • ____ I follow up immediately on every interesting job lead.
  • ____ I have attended job fairs and internship fairs put on by the school, campus and through other resources.
  • ____ I have met with the Career Services Office to answer questions about career planning.
  • ____ I have developed a list of potential networking contacts and keep in touch with them regularly.
  • ____ I have done three informational interviews with contacts at companies where I want to work.
  • ____ I know where a copy of my resume is and keep one close to my phone for when an employer calls.
  • ____ I follow-up each cover letter with a phone call or e-mail.
  • ____ I send thank you letters or emails to every person who interviews me.
